Welcome to the passenger seat aboard the Jolly Swag, my motorhome, as we seek out  roads less traveled in the country and in my mind.  Sharing my Blog about my Year on the Road with you will help me to keep my focus, remind me to pay attention, and examine trivia that lost its fascination during the hunter-gatherer decades. I collected my passengers from my several communities:  beginning with family and classmates, and stretching forward to include hikers, cyclists, cruising yachtsmen, writers, readers, travelers, and a growing list of new best friends from my latest pursuit, RV travel.  Already the comments you’ve posted reflect the diversity of my pals.

Scroll down for a list of recent posts with links to them.  You can also browse the site by pulling down the menus beneath each of the pages named in the title bar above.  There is a title bar on every page so you can hop the lily pads without returning to the Welcome page.

Hello AL! You picked the perfect theme for your blog. Happy trails to you! Kristen

  3. vernon dolphin says:

Well, Al, I am with you in spirit…wherever you are.

A friend once, a friend for ever…for me anyway.

Hope to see you soon…but where?

  4. tanya grove says:

I agree with Kristen–perfect header for your blog. But when you learn how to add pics, I want to see Empress Elsewhere, or whatever you decide to name her.

  5. Karl Baeck says:

Years ago when I was a young man, me and my family toured the country
in our travel trailer.. It’s name was Shasta, but there was another trailer we would see once in while motoring down the highway. It’s name was Nomad.
One fellow who owned one wrote this on the back of his trailer. “ We No Mad, We Happy”.

  6. linda enis says:

Al, you are doing what I am dreaming of doing someday. Your new home looks very luxurious, and I’m sure you’ll be enjoying yourself on the road as I remember you loving to meet new people. I have 3 more years to work full time, then I hope to retire somewhere in or near the Sierra’s, currently looking at a Del Webb outside of Reno at 5000 feet. It has pretty much everything I love, plus a built in social life, sort of like the bike club once was.
My last boyfriend has a travel trailer, (no longer my boyfriend) and we had a ball traveling all over Oregon and Washington. Two places remain in my heart, Bend, Oregon, (I like Portland, too, where I went to college) and Poulsbo, Washington. Hopefully you’ll get to travel through those places.
What is your route? I, too, have friends all over the US and hope to liesurely travel through the US, Canada, Mexico someday, with my dog, Roxy, and maybe a friend, who knows what the future holds in that department. Like you, I’ve been single a long, long time, and I’m not sure I’d ever want to change that.
Take care, happy trails, what kind of dog do you have? Let me know if you’re ever in the Sacramento area.
    Linda Enis

  7. patbean says:

I was referred to your blog because I, too, am a full-time RV traveler, who writes about her adventures in a blog I call “Travels With Maggie.” Maggie’s my 13-year-old cocker-spaniel co-pilot. I subscribed to your blog and look forward to reading more. I love your blog — and the name of your RV. I call mine Gypsy Lee, in honor of my grandfather, from whom my mother says I inheirited my wanderlust. I’ve been on the road now for seven years. Looking for birds, Mother Nature and untraveled roads.
    Pat Bean

  8. Colleen Rae says:

Al – Happy to be a passenger on your travels, albeit an invisible one. You take me to visit new places as well as old ones that I’ve been to before.
I like the photo – looks like you have gained a little weight from what I remembered. Your face is fuller. I’m sure it’s not much weight as you never ate much at one time. Thanks for keeping us posted.

  9. karen wittgraf says:

Looking good! I like the beard. It is well trimmed and sophisticated. Every writer should have a beard and I’ll start growing mine today.

  10. Berlena says:

You look fabulous Al. The road clearly agrees with your spirit…

  11. Fabulous! Now where’s your ship captain’s hat? Or better yet, a pirate hat and a parrot on your shoulder?

    • allevenson says:

In this country one wears a soft straw cowboy hat or a baseball cap.

I am still wearing the baseball cap that says JS on the front (the initials of the Jolly Swag) and John Steinbeck on the back. No one has picked up on the Steinbeck name and blessedly no one has said, “Hello, Mr Steinbeck,” to me.

  12. David Pierce says:

Just as I remember you from Quartzsite.

  13. Al, you are woolly, wild and wicked. Blessings…

  14. Really appreciated you stopping by the meeting tonight! My roommate and i have always wanted to take off and live on the road for awhile. look forward to reading more about your travels!

  15. Cynthia says:

First off I would like to say superb blog!

I had a quick question which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind.
I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your thoughts before writing.
I have had trouble clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out there.
I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10
to 15 minutes tend to be wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin.
Any recommendations or tips? Appreciate it!

    • allevenson says:

Cynthia, you are giving me too much credit as a disciplined writer. If I have something to say, I have no trouble with focus. If I don’t, I don’t. I know some novices do warm up exercises, I don’t. I do spend a little time thinking about the point I want to make. And I try to have the first sentence or the last sentence in my head before I start.

Hemingway said “the first three chapters are shit”. So for you maybe the first 15 minutes is shit. Throw it away and keep going.
